How To Prepare For Carpet Cleaning

You've booked your carpet cleaning — now what? A little preparation goes a long way toward getting the best results. This checklist covers everything you need to do before, during, and after your appointment to make sure your cleaning goes smoothly.

Before the Appointment

1. Clear the Floor

Remove all small items from the carpeted areas being cleaned. This includes shoes, toys, clothing, books, cables, and decorative items. The cleaner the floor, the faster and more thorough the cleaning will be.

2. Move or Secure Fragile Items

If furniture will be moved, remove all breakables, electronics, and valuables from on top of or inside furniture being relocated. This includes lamps, vases, picture frames, TVs, gaming consoles, and items in drawers that might shift during moving.

3. Decide on Furniture

Determine which furniture you'd like moved and which can stay in place. Most professionals will move light items like chairs and small tables at no charge. For large pieces — beds, dressers, entertainment centers — discuss your options during your free quote. You can also opt to have furniture cleaned around if you prefer.

4. Secure Pets

Pets should be confined to a room that isn't being cleaned, or taken to a friend's house, doggy daycare, or outdoors. Even calm pets can become stressed by the noise of cleaning equipment, and they can track dirt onto freshly cleaned, still-damp carpet. Plan for pets to stay off cleaned areas for 2 to 6 hours until carpets are fully dry.

5. Note Problem Areas

Walk through your home and make a mental or written note of any stains, high-traffic areas, or pet accidents you want the technician to focus on. Point these out during the pre-inspection walk-through so the technician can apply targeted pre-treatment.

Important: Do NOT apply store-bought stain removers before your appointment. Many of these products can permanently set stains, bleach fibers, or leave residues that attract soil. If you have a fresh spill, blot it with a clean white cloth and plain water — that's all you need to do.

The Night Before

• Vacuum — A light vacuum helps, though your technician will also perform a commercial-grade dry vacuuming. Every bit of dry soil removed beforehand means the cleaning solution can focus on deep soil.
• Remove pet items — Food bowls, water dishes, litter boxes, and pet beds should be relocated from cleaning areas.
• Clear walkways — Ensure the technician has a clear path from the entry door to all rooms being cleaned.

What You Should Do During Cleaning
