How to Remove Ink Stains From Carpet

The difficulty of removal depends entirely on the type of ink: ballpoint pen ink is usually removable, while permanent markers are designed to be just that. Types of Ink and Removability

• Don't use colored cloths — The dye in colored cloths can transfer to the carpet, adding a new stain on top of the ink.

Permanent Marker: The Tough Case

Permanent markers like Sharpies are designed to be just that — permanent. The dyes are formulated to bond permanently with surfaces, and they do an unfortunately good job on carpet. Here's what you can try:

1. Apply rubbing alcohol — Dab with alcohol as described above. This may lighten the marker, even if it doesn't fully remove it.
2. Try hand sanitizer — The high alcohol content in hand sanitizer gel can sometimes lift marker ink. Apply, let sit for 2 minutes, then blot.
3. Use a commercial ink remover — Products specifically formulated for ink removal (like Amodex) are available and more effective than household products.

Be realistic: permanent marker may not come out completely, even with professional treatment. In some cases, the affected carpet fibers can be replaced by a professional installer using a donor piece from a closet remnant.

Your carpet's fiber type affects how it responds to ink removal methods:

• Nylon — The most stain-resistant synthetic. Alcohol is safe and effective. Responds well to professional treatment.
• Polyester — Naturally stain-resistant but sensitive to certain solvents. Alcohol is generally safe; avoid acetone.
• Olefin (polypropylene) — Highly stain-resistant. Alcohol is safe. Avoid acetone, which can damage fibers.
