What Is Steam Cleaning (Hot Water Extraction)?
Despite the name, "steam cleaning" doesn't actually use steam. The correct term is hot water extraction (HWE) — a process where heated water (200°F+) mixed with cleaning solution is injected deep into your carpet fibers under high pressure, then immediately extracted by a powerful vacuum. The heat dissolves grease and oils, the pressure flushes out embedded soil, and the vacuum removes the water along with the dissolved contaminants.
This is the method recommended by every major carpet manufacturer — including Mohawk, Shaw, and Stainmaster — and it's the standard defined by the IICRC S100 professional cleaning standard. HydroLux uses truck-mounted hot water extraction for all residential carpet cleaning.
What Is Carpet Shampooing?
Carpet shampooing is an older cleaning method where a foaming detergent is applied to the carpet and worked into the fibers using a rotary brush machine. The foam is designed to encapsulate dirt particles, which are then supposed to be vacuumed up after drying. In practice, however, shampooing leaves significant soap residue in the carpet.
Shampooing was popular in the 1970s–1990s but has largely been replaced by hot water extraction in professional cleaning. It's still used by some budget cleaning services and DIY rental machines, but it is not recommended by carpet manufacturers or the IICRC.
The Residue Problem: Why Shampooing Fails
The fundamental flaw of shampooing is that it adds cleaning solution to your carpet but doesn't remove it effectively. The foaming detergent is designed to dry and be vacuumed up, but in reality:
- Up to 30–40% of the shampoo remains trapped in the carpet fibers and backing
- This residue is sticky and continuously attracts dirt particles from foot traffic and the air
- Within 2–4 weeks, the carpet looks dirty again — often worse than before cleaning
- The residue can also cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals and pets
Hot water extraction, by contrast, rinses the carpet. The cleaning solution is injected and immediately extracted, carrying dissolved soil with it. The result is a carpet that stays clean for months, not weeks.
Health Considerations
For families with allergies, asthma, or pets, the cleaning method matters more than you might think:
- Allergen removal: Hot water extraction at 200°F+ kills dust mites and flushes out pollen, pet dander, and bacteria. Shampooing at room temperature cannot achieve this.
- Chemical residue: Shampooing leaves detergent in your carpet that can irritate skin and respiratory systems. Extraction rinses all solution out.
- Mold prevention: Shampooing's long dry times (8–24 hours) create ideal conditions for mold growth in Florida's humid climate. Extraction's fast dry times (2–4 hours) minimize this risk.
The Bottom Line
Carpet shampooing is an outdated method that has been superseded by hot water extraction for good reason. It leaves residue, causes rapid re-soiling, and doesn't remove allergens or deep soil. If any cleaning company offers to "shampoo" your carpet, it's a sign they're using outdated methods — and you should look elsewhere.
