Weekly Kitchen Cleaning Tasks

Weekly tasks go beyond surface wiping:

  • Deep clean the sink — Scrub with baking soda, sanitize with vinegar, polish the faucet
  • Clean the stovetop — Remove grates/burners, soak and scrub, wipe the surface
  • Wipe down appliance exteriors — Refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, oven
  • Clean the microwave interior — Steam with water and lemon, then wipe
  • Wipe cabinet fronts and handles — Grease and fingerprints accumulate here
  • Clean the range hood — Wipe the exterior and clean the filter
  • Sweep and mop the floor — Including under the table and in corners
  • Clean the trash can — Wipe interior and exterior, replace the bag
  • Wipe down countertops thoroughly — Move small appliances to clean underneath
  • Clean the coffee maker exterior — Wipe down and empty the carafe
  • Discard expired food — Check the refrigerator for items past their date

Monthly Kitchen Cleaning Tasks

Monthly tasks address areas that don't need weekly attention:

  • Clean inside the refrigerator — Remove all shelves and drawers, wash with warm soapy water, sanitize, dry, and replace
  • Clean inside the oven — Use oven cleaner or the self-clean cycle
  • Clean the dishwasher — Run a cleaning cycle with dishwasher cleaner or white vinegar, clean the filter
  • Descale the coffee maker — Run vinegar through, then 2 water cycles
  • Clean cabinet interiors — Remove items, wipe shelves, check for expired food in pantry
  • Clean the range hood filter — Soak in degreaser, scrub, rinse, dry
  • Clean small appliances — Toaster crumb tray, blender base, etc.
  • Sanitize the sink drain — Baking soda + vinegar, then flush with boiling water
  • Clean the garbage disposal — Grind ice cubes and lemon peels
  • Wipe down walls and backsplash — Remove grease splatter
  • Clean light fixtures — Dust and wipe covers
  • Check and replace AC filter — Critical in Florida

How to Clean Kitchen Appliances

Refrigerator

  • Weekly: Wipe exterior, discard expired food, wipe shelves as needed
  • Monthly: Remove all shelves and drawers, wash with warm soapy water, sanitize, dry completely before replacing
  • Tip: Clean spills immediately to prevent staining. In Florida, check the rubber gasket seals for mold — wipe with vinegar.

Oven

  • Monthly (for heavy cooks): Use commercial oven cleaner per manufacturer instructions, OR make a paste of baking soda and water, apply to interior, leave overnight, scrub and wipe
  • For self-cleaning ovens: Use the self-clean cycle, then wipe out ash residue. Do NOT use oven cleaner on self-cleaning ovens.
  • Tip: Place a sheet of foil on the bottom rack to catch drips and make cleanup easier.

Microwave

  • Weekly: Steam clean — fill a microwave-safe bowl with water and lemon slices, microwave for 3 minutes, let sit for 5 minutes, then wipe interior
  • Tip: Cover food with a microwave cover or paper towel to prevent splatter.

Dishwasher

  • Monthly: Remove the filter at the bottom and rinse under warm water. Run a cleaning cycle with dishwasher cleaner or a cup of white vinegar placed on the top rack.
  • Tip: Scrape plates before loading to prevent food buildup in the filter.

Coffee Maker

  • Monthly: Descale by filling the reservoir with equal parts white vinegar and water, running a brew cycle, then running 2 cycles of plain water
  • Weekly: Wash the carafe and removable parts in warm soapy water
  • Tip: Florida's hard water causes scale buildup faster — descale monthly.

Range Hood

  • Monthly: Remove the filter, soak in hot water with degreaser, scrub, rinse, and dry. Wipe down the exterior.
  • Weekly: Wipe the exterior to prevent grease buildup
  • Tip: Grease buildup on the range hood is a fire hazard. Clean regularly.

Kitchen Degreasing Guide

Grease is the #1 kitchen cleaning challenge. Here's how to handle it:

  • Light grease (countertops, cabinet fronts): Dish soap and warm water, or an all-purpose degreaser
  • Medium grease (stovetop, backsplash): Commercial degreaser spray, let sit 2-3 minutes, then scrub
  • Heavy grease (range hood, above stove): Commercial degreaser, let sit 5-10 minutes, scrub with a brush or sponge
  • Stubborn grease: Baking soda paste (baking soda + water), apply, let sit, scrub
  • Prevention: Use the range hood fan every time you cook. Wipe splatter immediately before it hardens.

Kitchen Odor Elimination

  • Garbage disposal: Grind ice cubes and lemon or lime peels to clean and freshen
  • Sink drain: Pour baking soda down the drain, followed by vinegar, let fizz for 10 minutes, then flush with boiling water
  • Trash can: Sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of the bag. Clean the can interior monthly.
  • Refrigerator: Place an open box of baking soda inside to absorb odors. Replace every 3 months.
  • Microwave: Steam with lemon water to eliminate food odors
  • Persistent odors: Check for hidden spills under appliances or in cabinet corners

Florida Kitchen Cleaning Considerations

  • Humidity and mold — Florida's humidity can cause mold in the kitchen, especially around the sink and in the refrigerator gasket. Check weekly.
  • Hard water — Florida's hard water causes scale buildup on faucets, in the coffee maker, and in the dishwasher. Descale monthly.
  • Pest activity — Florida has year-round pest activity. A clean kitchen deters ants, roaches, and fruit flies. Clean up crumbs and spills immediately.
  • Grease and humidity — In Florida's humidity, grease becomes sticky and harder to clean. Wipe splatter immediately.
  • AC and ventilation — Use the range hood fan to remove cooking odors and humidity from the kitchen.
