Cleaning Before Guests Arrive

Having guests over doesn't require a full deep clean — but it does require strategic cleaning. Guests notice different things than you do: they notice the bathroom, the smell, the clutter, and the visible surfaces. This guide helps you prioritize what matters and skip what doesn't, so you can welcome guests without spending your entire day cleaning.

The Guest's-Eye View

Before you start cleaning, walk through your home as a guest would. Enter through the front door and move through each room your guests will see. Guests notice:

• Smell — The first thing guests notice when they enter
• Clutter — Personal items, mail, dishes, toys
• Bathroom cleanliness — Especially the toilet
• Kitchen cleanliness — Counters, sink, dishes
• Floor cleanliness — Visible dirt, crumbs, pet hair

• Scrub the toilet bowl and wipe the seat and exterior
• Wipe the sink and faucet

• Ensure toilet paper is full
• Quick mop of the floor (or at least around the toilet and sink)
• Empty the trash

• Make the bed with fresh, clean sheets
• Provide clean towels (set on the bed or in the bathroom)
• Dust all surfaces (nightstand, dresser, shelves)
• Vacuum the floor, including under the bed
• Clean the mirror
• Empty a drawer or provide hanger space in the closet
• Provide a bedside lamp and ensure it works
• Add a water glass or bottle on the nightstand

• Light a candle — 30 minutes before guests arrive

• Humidity control — Ensure humidity is below 60% for comfort; run the AC or dehumidifier
